Genre Six ~ Linguistic, Visual-Spatial
This genre demonstrates the strategic use of researched information and ideas surrounding one aspect of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. This advertisement, in the form of a pamphlet, details research done on the town of Eatonville, were much of Their Eyes Were Watching God takes place. As my research revealed, Eatonville was once the home of Zora Neale Hurston. Both of the images on the pamphlet were taken in Eatonville around the time of Hurston's residency there, the early 1900s, the photo in the upper left hand corner showing Hurston holding the hand of an unnamed local boy. The contact informations lists Mayor John Hurston, Zora Neale Hurston's father. Similarities between then name 'John' and 'Joe', the fictional mayor of Eatonville in Their Eyes Were Watching God, are hard to ignore. Other similarities between the real Eatonville and the fictional one are much starker, both towns being the first 'negro-only' town in America, the only directions towards Eatonville given in the novel being "Off Route 17", corresponding with its actual physical location. Facts detailing the lives of residents of Eatonville as found on the right side of the flyer come from the article "In A Town Apart, The Pride and Trials of Black Life" by Damien Cave for the New York Times. The youth schooling mentioned in the article and on the flyer can be found having influenced Hurston's political leanings in her later life, as she was herself a subject of Booker T Washingtons teachings during her time in Eatonville.
