Genre Three ~ Interpersonal, Linguistic
The This genre is structured to convey interactions between two characters from the text Their Eyes Were Watching God. I chose to showcase imagined dialog between Janie and Nanny in the form of postcards. One of the prevailing tribulations that Janie faced in this novel was her aloneness in the world, having no family after the passing of Nanny. This loneliness is the reason that often she struggles in her life, chasing love and support from romantic relationships. It is possible that Janie may not have experienced some of the hardships she faced had she possessed any semblance of family to support her against injustices. What I have done with this genre is create imagined interactions between Janie and Nanny during on of the most trying times of Janie's life, her relationship with the emotional and physically abusive Joe 'Jody' Starks. However, this imagined dialog does not reveal any change in fate possible for Janie, as Nanny was characterized early on in the novel as a limiting on Janie's freedom, despite her good intentions for Janie.
The postcards read left to right, Janie's postcards on the left and Nanny's on the right. The exchange begins shortly after Janie's desertion of her first husband, with lots of time passing between Janie's responses. The final postcard does not merit a response from Nanny, as it is indicatory of the change Janie makes in her sense of agency as she resigns herself to ride out her abusive marriage and save her energy for a future love.
